I hadn't caught that Pegler quote, but I recognised the language as straight out of Buzz Windrip's mouth in the old classic "It Can't Happen Here"... the truculent faux-populism, the simplistic jingoism, the "elite"-bashing... Fingers are indeed crossed that this maneuver is seen, and quickly, for what it is, namely the cynical use of a slight show businiess figure to serve as a figurehead for the criminal cabal that has been in ascendancy behind the throne since, I don't know, November 1963. The Bill Casey matrix of arms, oil, and dope that has essentially hijacked the Republican Party and brought us all within a hairs-breadth of genuine fascism. The next round of the culture war may be a shooting one.
