Just got back from seeing Ray Davies in a small club venue playing (mostly) acoustic with a second guitarist. I'd never seen Ray or the Kinks, so it was a great opportunity to see a master songwriter up close and watch him work. He was great- looked great and sounded just as good as he did when I first heard him in the sixth grade.

I think that Ray spawned a whole generation of literate, witty, British pop songwriters. Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Difford and Tilbrook and many others owe him a debt of thanks. It was great seeing him.

Tomorrow night it's the annual Mahler Festival and I'm off to see a performance of Mahler's 9th symphony.
