Posting a reply to my own post:

It seems to me that conservatives, having thoroughly 'screwed the pooch', as they used to say at NASA- the economy, the war, even failing to advance their own peculiar agenda like privatizing social security have nothing left to attack Obama with other than people's own hopes and optimism about the possibility of a change for the better.

It's a cynical, calculated, and sleazy move: categorize Obama as 'the Messiah' and denigrate people's hopes for his candidacy as slavish and robot-like. If you don't think that that's a tactic just listen for a moment to Hannity, Medved, Limbaugh, Savage, etc; They're all pushing the same line and we find it here on DBIS echoed in the posts of Dale, Pat, GM, and others. "Obama is a Messiah!" Fear him and his followers.

Obama is an intelligent, viable, articulate candidate for the Presidency of the US. People are not looking for a 'Messiah'. People are looking for a rational, reasonable leader after eight years of soul- crushing misery and fucking with the American experiment in Democracy.

If you think that McCain is a corrective to that then you had probably best review your own desires for a 'Messiah'.
