Because Hillary has connections.  I am surprised that Obama wouldn't have seen this coming . . . years ago.

Another thought is that Obama didn't really expect to do as well this time as he has.  Maybe he is running to get his hat in the ring, and like Nixon or Reagan, be a household name at a later point in his career.  His alleged weakness, experience, won't appear that way in 4 or 8 years if he has a successful run in the Senate or as Illinois governor. 

That's assuming he loses the nomination or the election.  I think he could still win the general election if he carries the nomination, depending on how he presents himself.  It'll be nothing if not interesting.
