I'm surprised Obama is constantly referred to as African-American. I suppose that's literally true, but A-A is generally used as synonymous with Black. As far as I know, Obama is at least half white, and given migration patterns in Northern Africa (where his father was from), he's likely a little more than half white. Recently, there was a mini-uproar about a white actor playing the part of Obama on SNL. Given Obama's actual family makeup . . . why?- - - I'll agree that his wife's statement wasn't even likely true, and it certainly wasn't a smart soundbite to say. That said, it appears to have largely blown over, because frankly it wasn't terribly important. Her larger point was (I think) that the US is finally getting over racial politics. Things like the SNL "controversy," however, show just how far we have to go.
