That was my point Reg: it's smoke filled room politics with compromises and promises and bussed in/goody laden participants rather than voters voting. As you obviously agree, that is a terribly important nuance.

For instance, during my reading for examples for those herein, I came across the point that in 1976 Jimmy Carter technically came in a distant second to "Undecided" and then touted it as a great victory.

It's an important distinction, in terms of perceptions, that's all.
