Icon the Prostate: bend over lads, here comes the fickle finger of fate..

Hate to interrupt this program for a rather gnarly commercial, but Dan Fogelberg's passing brings this clearly to mind.   For all males ages 45 and up, for God's sake get an annual (yes annual) prostate exam.  It is certainly recommended for men age 50 and up, but if you have a family history of this problem, start earlier.

I get mine done by my Urologist, 'cause he has a very experienced finger, but a good family doc will do.  It is a rather "uncomfortable" 15 seconds of your life, and your doctor won't likely send you flowers afterwards, but it can save your life.  It needs to be followed by having a PSA level done (prostate specific antigen).    The two tests together will detect the vast majority of prostate cancers (unfortunately not 100%) but as close to perfect and together constitute the most cost effective measures of early detection.

Undetected prostate cancer, especially in "younger" men, is a much more aggressive disease than in elderly men for some reason.  It is often asymptomatic, until advanced.

So, drop 'em..bend over and smile.  It's only because I love you.
