From what I've read, it's not the cars that are the problem, it producing the hydrogyn. Extracting it from water as proposed, on the needed scale, is just not feasable at this time. Extracting it from natural gas or propane is energy negative - you get less energy output from the extracted hydrogyn than the energy it took to produce it.
