the cat's way out of the bag on this issue. we do have the right to own guns in this country. enforcing existing laws equally and fully is a good thing. making it harder for unstables to get guns is a good thing. 'buy back days', where guns are traded in for concert tix or cash or whatever are a good thing.

the reality is that there will always be these stories in the news from time to time. it is a disheartening series of tragedies, but also a sad fact of life in America. increased security measures can help. maybe someday someone packing a piece will stop a murderous rampager (still waiting for that to become a regular reality; who wants to get in a firefight against a superior-armed foe?).

many of my friends here in SF own and shoot. i've held handguns and automatic assault rifles as well, felt their weight, aimed their barrels. there is a dangerous sense of power and perhaps even a mild erotica about them. i understand the attraction.

sure, i'm deadly with a meat cleaver and a pair of drumsticks, but if i die someday because of my choice not to own a gun, then so be it. the rest of you kids have fun. all i know is that guns are not for me.
