An interesting perspective.  I don't own a gun for similar reason about accidental use and self-control that are illustrated in your point.  However, I also think about my grandfather, who was a ranch hand at one point, or a friend who camped and hike a lot (either alone or as a duo).  Both needed guns along for a variety of reasons.  I think European pundits often don't account for the sheer vastness of the American west when they talk about wholesale gun restriction.

Another point that seems pertinent comes from my extensive travels to other countries.  In India, the newspapers were full of reports of Maoist rebels in the interior running roughshod over the (gunless) locals.  Likewise, there were multiple stories (each week!) about mothers-in-law killing daughters-in-law or disfiguring them with boiling water (undoubtedly to improve the prospects of their sons).

In India and much of Africa, foeticide is rampant in numbers far greater than 33 per day.

In Southeast Asia, jilted male lovers throw acid in the faces of those who've "wronged" them.

Suicide bombers . . . enough said.

Same result, different implements of destruction.  The sheer randomness capable with gun deaths (and bomb deaths) are disturbing, though.

With the number of guns and parts now in circulation in the US, I wonder if any legislation would or could actually have much effect?
