It's 2 a.m. here and I'm waiting for the first cow of the season to calve. She was twitchy all day yesterday and has now decided that this is the time.

I dragged John out of bed and we got her in the crush (after setting up a generator for lights). However, the calf isn't quite up high enough yet, so we're leaving the cow to push it into the right spot (and hopefully even have it by herself).

Meanwhile, I have to stay awake... Last year, this particular cow lost her calf - it was in the breach position and by the time we got it out, it had died. This year is looking more promising - the calf is facing the right way and even bit John as he was feeling around inside! Keep your fingers crossed for Yasmin and her baby!
