Wrt. net access, just a few pointers. Today, satellite communication (satcom) is really inexpensive (especially voice), such as Inmarsat, Iridium, GlobalStar etc.

My previous employer (http://www.tt.dk) is the worlds largest manufacturer of (civilian) satcom equipment (terminals) using the Inmarsat network. Inmarsat has a new service, Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) available now, which provides data rates up to 432kbps using an A4-size T&T terminal (that's a "Legal"-letter size to you yanks). Not sure about air time pricing, but it's normall fair and you pay per Mbit (or something like that).

Today, all companies operating in remote areas of the world have some kind of satcom available. Are you going to work within humanitarian, oil & gas, disaster relief, security sector?

Yrs,

Don Pedro
