You should check out John Dean's latest book, Conservatives Without Conscience, which goes into great detail on social authoritarianism. Dean's thought is much informed by the work of psychologist and researcher Bob Altemeyer who, along with others in the field, has conducted long-term and rigorous studies on the subject. To this Dean adds his insider's knowledge of the modern Republican party and U.S. politics in general. It's not terribly dense reading but it does require some thought to get through. All in all, it's a damning portrait of the current U.S. administration and the dominant sections of the Republican Party. As you say, there's a significant segment of the population which will always back authoritarian politicians. They are certainly not a majority, which is a hopeful fact.
