I was doing some song mixes recently and did an admittedly low tech recording of audio from a DVD on my Windows XP computer. Apologies if this goes into too much obvious detail but I don't want to leave out any important steps.

1. I used the Windows Sound Recorder. Go to Start|Programs|Accessories|Entertainment|Sound Recorder.

2. I set the recording source to Stereo Mix, I believe. I right clicked on the Volume control in the lower right Taskbar and selected Open Volume Control. In that window I selected Options|Properties and selected Recording to show recording source options. There I checked the Stereo Mix option and set the volume to a suitable level.

3. I put in the DVD and let it run using the default DVD player (Media Player or similar). Then at the appropriate time on the DVD, I pressed the Record button on the Sound Recorder. You can confirm audio levels while it records by the amplitude indicator in Sound Recorder. If it reaches the top of the indicator, recording volume needs to be reduced to avoid clipping.

Note: You may notice that the Sound Recorder only records 60 seconds at a time. Or at least it *seems* that way. To allow longer recordings, let it record (with no audio) for 60 seconds, then press Record again and it will add another 60 seconds. Repeat until you have 5 or 6 minutes (however long the song is), move the position bar back to the beginning and start recording the song. The song will record over the several minutes of blank space already present, uninterrupted. When done, go to Edit|Delete After Current Position to trim off any extra time remaining and then you can save the sound file as a *.wav, ready for burning to CD.
