David, first you say, "I'm sure Hussein was still killing people, as are all the other monsters in this world, who we as a nation tend to ignore, when there is nothing in it for us [see Sudan, Liberia, Rwanda]".
My point in a confusing way, is that this administration's use of getting rid of him because he's killing his own people to defend its decision to invade Iraq, strikes me as BS, our country has a long history of ignoring and/or supporting vicious despots when it suits us and leaving fledgling democratic uprisings twisting in the wind when it isn't politically expedient to intervene (in 68' we all but told Czechoslovakia we would support them in their efforts to throw of the Soviet yoke, they did under the courageous leadership of Vaclav Havel, we did nothing, Soviet tanks rolled in and quashed the push for democracy) more recently Liberia overthrew their dictator and begged us to help them (they're named after us) we sat off shore doing nothing. I feel pretty confident in stating we did not go into Iraq to promote peace and freedom.
Then you say, "I don't understand your thinking as far as the danger ever coming from Iraq. Iraq never was a threat to America."
I'm simply disagreeing with the accepted belief that Iraq was a threat to any other country (possibly Israel) much less us . . . at the risk of oversimplification . . . as a threat to any country on a scale of 1 to 10, Iraq was maybe 1 or 2, we responded with a 10, it doesn't make sense based on the arguments put forth by our government . . . which leads me to believe our government had other motives . . .
Are you saying because we (and the UN, btw) did nothing in Sudan, Liberia and Rwanda because nothing was in it for us, we should've remained consistant and allowed Saddam to murder and rape his own people?
Personally, I wish we (and the world and the UN) did far more to protect people from vicious leaders, but I'm not sure I know how we should go about doing it. So, I was trying to separate out my points of viwe on the various reasons put forth to support Bush's decision and why I think it was wrong.
