My gross family income of $65K is broken down as such;  Off the top is a 25% federal income tax.  Provincial income tax is ~10%.  Almost all goods and services carry a 7% federal tax and a 7% provincial tax (rate varies by prov.).  The rest of my cheque has deductions for unemployment insurance (~$75/month), federal pension plan (~$50), and family health insurance (partially employer funded, my share is $100/month) which covers basically all medical visits and tests, prescriptions, hospitalization, transportation, partial eyeware coverage.

All told it works out ot about 53% taxation rate.  We have a cute thing hear a right wing think tank came up with called "tax freedom day."  That is the day the avg. Cdn. now pockets his pay after clearing his tax burden.  My wife and I basically work till July 7th for free and then the rest of the year is all ours, YIPPEE!!!

Ask any Canadian though if they'd be willing to dump our universal health care for a tax cut, the answer will be a resounding never.

Hope that sort of helps.
