Lee:I know that seven books is a big committment --- however ---
this is SK's best work by far. Actually, SK began this book when he
was in college. What most people do not realize is that The DARK TOWER is based
upon the ROBERT BROWNING poem CHILDE ROLAND TO THE DARK
TOWER CAME. This epic-poem was written in January 1852, but
published in 1855.During his freshman year in college 1967/68, SK read this poem,
and in March 1970, he began THE GUNSLINGER. It was published in
1982. So, from 1982 until 2004 --- this story was being thought
about, written, rewritten, and finally, published. The final saga would end up being some 2.5 million words in
length, which as we all know, takes seven volumes in which to tell
the complete story. There you go! Some TRIVIA about The DARK TOWER . . . Here is the poem for you to read:http://www.bluejo.demon.co.uk/poetry/poems/rol.htmNOTE: King specifically quotes the last four lines of stanza 15 of
this 34 stanza, 204 line poem --- this is the stanza that begins "I
shut my eyes and turned them on my heart" which was used as the
opening epigraph for The DARK TOWER IV: WIZARD AND GLASS.Yes Lee, you SHOULD read this series of books. It is a most excellent ride . . . KDB = Buffalo, NY USA
