Fabulous movie, Ed.  Just saw it recently.  I agree, it works on every level, so many sub-plots all intertwined, serious themes plus some very funny scenes.

Sadly, the actor who played the lead character Gerd Wiesler, actor Ulrich Muhe, has passed away July this year from stomach cancer.
